Hatching Grounds
Genetic Code Creator - HELP ME!

Basics to Know
The code is meant to act as a guideline and to keep rares from happening all the time. At least in normal clutches. I would rather you choose what you want your dragon capable of having hatch, not me – as long as you keep things logical. This is where I think some people are becoming frustrated (with me). Relax. I'm not going to spaz on you if you make a mistake or if you ask me a question. If you know your dragon was from a traditional Weyr, then it will have a pretty boring code. This is fine. Rares should be rare. I don't want a lot of them. Hence, there is now a code. Scrap everything done before. So, your dragon had a clutch somewhere else that had a zillion rares pop out even though there mate was "normal". Oh well, genetic mutation happens, right? We'll just leave it at that.

That form is not a quiz. It's set up for you to pick any and all aspects of your dragon's code. I've tried to simplify and label everything for you where needed. This sheet will help you understand, I hope, more of what you should be looking for with certain types of dragons. There are some coloration that will not be able to have a specific code. Some were not created by me. Just get as close to you can. Really, all you have to do is go down the lists provided and pick a allele-code that you like/want. If you want no rares at all possible, pick the first ones. Otherwise, if you want to get a little bolder, move down the list. Just make sure the stuff in parenthesis matches what your dragon is. You cannot have a green dragon with a Color Code of C2C2. It will have to be C1C2.

For your information, I'm am going to temporarily give up on my code project – sort of. Don't worry, I'm still going to work on it along with the Records Database. Hopefully this will help you later. If you know the parents and they're in the database, you can generate a possible code for them. Otherwise, just give me the GID of your dragon if it's already in the database and *poof* you don't have to worry about the code!

Starting Out: How to Get Started
I'm going to use two dragons for my examples. The first is going to be a green named Myth. She's of "traditional stock" meaning there is nothing really spectacular about her or her code for the most part. Most dragons of the traditional colors will be similar to her. Our second example is a black w/ copper-red male named Darketh. He's obviously rare in three different ways. Myth will have her code in green while Darketh will be in red. This way you should be able to follow them easier. I will be putting all the codes in the same line as we go just so you can see how they work.

Below is the two dragons visually.

Step One: Choose Base: First you need to know the size of the dragon because the size often will tell you what color they should have been (if rare). Most rares hatched were sport sized thus they need wd with both or the only X gene. The exception to this are twins, triplets, and quartets who are only smaller because of the fact they had to share an egg. Myth is a typical green so I simply have to pick one of the green codes. Darketh is the size of a blue so I pick any of the blue codes.

green Myth: XG XG rr Bb
black w/ copper-red Darketh: Xg Y Rr Bb

As of right now, these two are just a green and blue. Very boring.

Step Two: Choose for X: Now you need to choose the WDF code that is connected to the X-gene. Like the above step, this isn't something to get very picky on. However, do watch the F allele. Most dragons have F, some may have f because they are are fertile female (golds excluded – gold's have F, too), or they are a male carrying it. This is a mutation originally from Flynnth's descendents but I'm not going to freak if you give it to your green on purpose. It is rare, however. Also, watch the W and D – if you're dragon isn't a sport, don't have wd for all the X's. Females can have one for one X, but not the males. For Myth I choose WDF for the first and WdF for the second. For Darketh, I only need one so I'm going to pick wDF.

green Myth: XGWDF XGWdF rr Bb
black w/ copper-red Darketh: XgwDF Y Rr Bb

NOTES: If your dragon's gender was altered, but they retained a size of the previous color, then you will need to choose a WDF for the Y* gene. Y* marks when the X is replaced with a Y but the rest of the code from X is still connected to it – but not. You don't use anything after Y* when breeding because it's not really connected to the Y. It's just there. So, if you have a male gold who is the size of a gold, you will need to use this. Otherwise, if you have a male gold the size of a blue, you don't. That is a different code-set you will find out about later. Same with females that are bronze, brown or blue sized. Instead of Y they will have X*. There is nothing connected to this, however, because there was nothing there to begin with. If you want to know how to breed these dragons with the rest of that code missing, check out the genetics page at the FGPC WeyrHall.

Step Three: Choose Shade: Most dragons are an average shade. I don't know many places that actually did different shades for there dragons. If you want to make your dragon lighter or darker just for variety, then choose hh. Otherwise pick anything with H in it. If your dragon is defiantly a very dark or very pale version of there color, choose h1h1. For Myth I'm going to pick HH and for Darketh I'll choose Hh1. This makes them both average in shade.

green Myth: XGWDF XGWdF rr Bb HH
black w/ copper-red Darketh: XgwDF Y Rr Bb Hh1

Step Four: Ryslen Gene: Most dragons have LL because this code is for Light and Night dragons, a specific rare that came/comes originally from Nidus Ryslen. If the dragon is a light or night they have ll. If you want a possibility of them having this effect but they aren't a light or night, choose Ll. Otherwise, just pick LL. If you check there pedigree and they have a Ryslen born dragon, there is a good chance they do have that gene. Otherwise just pick LL. I'm going to pick LL for Myth and Ll for Darketh just for a difference.

green Myth: XGWDF XGWdF rr Bb HH LL
black w/ copper-red Darketh: XgwDF Y Rr Bb Hh1 Ll

Step Five: Clouded Gene: Clouded is a recessive pattern so most dragons have UU while some have Uu. If your dragon is clouded, you can only have uu. Thus, Myth will have UU and Darketh will have Uu, again for variety.

green Myth: XGWDF XGWdF rr Bb HH LL UU
black w/ copper-red Darketh: XgwDF Y Rr Bb Hh1 Ll Uu

Step Six: Color Modification: Here is where you can have some fun, technically. The first set is what color your dragon is, or what group. They are in parenthesis on the side and there is a list at the FGPC WeyrHall on the genetics page if you need more help. The second one is whatever they are carrying so if you don't want them to carry any rare possibility then pick C1 or match there first one (like C2C2). Or, pick a higher number. For a more traditional dragon, C1 and C2 are pretty safe choices. But even if you choose C2 for the second one, that won't mean you'll be getting rares. It will depend on her/his mate's genetics if this happens. So, for Myth I'm going to pick C1C2. Darketh has a body color of black thus he's going to get C2C3.

green Myth: XGWDF XGWdF rr Bb HH LL UU C1C2
black w/ copper-red Darketh: XgwDF Y Rr Bb Hh1 Ll Uu C2C3

Step Seven: Two-Tones: T2 and C2 are not the same color sets here but the principle is the same as the Color alleles. Myth is boaring here and gets T1T1. Darketh is a two-tone – he's a black-red. He gets T5T5, T5 being for bright solids which red falls into.

green Myth: XGWDF XGWdF rr Bb HH LL UU C1C2 T1T1
black w/ copper-red Darketh: XgwDF Y Rr Bb Hh1 Ll Uu C2C3 T5T5

NOTES: I am not going to explain the genetics behind shimmers, color-switches, and other rares like gemstone colors. This is explained at the FGPC WeyrHall. Just check if this applies to you and I'll take care of the rest. If you have a female blue who is the size of a green, then you will need to check the option for C0. Same with a gold who is the size of a green or a bronze the size of a blue. And, just to let you know about some of the previous FGPC rendered colors: granite, sandstone, marble, and night water are part of C5. Golden sunset and lightning storm are part of C6. Anything else is considered Other Rare.

Introduction to Speckles
Speckles actually make up a few different classified patterns, like the two dapple greens from the Tenth Pass (clutches 5 & 6). It is possible to get a normal color that is speckled but listed as regular – they are speckled in there same color thus it's not seen and classified as regular. You can also get a dappled effect with eighter being speckled in a lighter/darker shade then they are or are speckled in black and white lightly. I'll explain double speckle colors when you get to colors. Jesioth is listed as blue by Talor Cliff's Records. However, he should be, and genetically is, a speckle dragon. He's speckled in silver very lightly. This is something Falora mentions in the Hatching but didn't color him acordingly. This is one reason I will/can allow speckles to happen naturally with the average Pernese dragon. XD

Step Eight: Speckle Opacity: For most dragons, O will be at least one of the alleles. From there you can have O again or o1, o2, o3 and o4. Since most of my first speckles had rich, very noticeable speckles, you will want o3 or o4 as the first one, then o3 or o4 again. Dapples and some of the newer speckles I've done have lower numbers (o1 or o2). Myth is easy, she's OO. Darketh, on the other hand, is speckled. Looking at the picture of him above you can see the copper is bright and noticeable so, he's going to have o3o4 which gives him a heavy but not a full effect of the speckles on his hide.

green Myth: XGWDF XGWdF rr Bb HH LL UU C1C2 T1T1 OO
black w/ copper-red Darketh: XgwDF Y Rr Bb Hh1 Ll Uu C2C3 T4T4 o3o4

NOTE: After this, even a dragon with OO has to pick what they could have been or have if there opacity was high enough to show this. Even if your dragon is like Myth, you're still going to have to pick from the next two steps.

Step Nine: Speckle Density: Look at the speckles on your dragon for this one. Most were SS or Ss back in the day, so that's easy. However, Darketh doesn't have very many speckles. With that said, Myth gets Ss, which is an average or medium density. Darketh's speckles are few so he gets ss.

green Myth: XGWDF XGWdF rr Bb HH LL UU C1C2 T1T1 OO (Ss
black w/ copper-red Darketh: XgwDF Y Rr Bb Hh1 Ll Uu C2C3 T4T4 o3o4 (ss

Step Ten: Speckle Color: Now to pick colors. Darketh's colors are copper so he'll have N2 for his first one and since the C and N numbers correspond to the same charts, it shouldn't be as hard as two-tone wings. I'm also going to give him N2 for his second one. I suggest picking low for a traditional color like Myth, who gets N1N2. Darketh's code is N2N2.

NOTES: Double speckles are indicated with an astrick on the second allele. Gold w/ silver & white Nysheth was my first double speckled dragon. Her speckle color code is: N2N2*. If her code was N2N2 she would be gold w/ white. So, why aren't all her children speckled twice? Because of two reasons. The N2* carries over together and must be second to whatever her mate's alleles are. Night Ainnth has N1N2 for his code which ends up with: N1N2, N2N2, N1N2*, and N2*N2. You see the last one? A dragon with this is speckled once but carries the double speckling pattern. Get it? Don't worry if you don't. If your dragon is double-speckled then I'll put the * where needed. You just make sure you pick the right list for the second speckles. If you have a dragon speckled in red and white, you'll have to pick N2N4. You can't pick N4N2. XD

green Myth: XGWDF XGWdF rr Bb HH LL UU C1C2 T1T1 OO (Ss N1N2)
black w/ copper-red Darketh: XgwDF Y Rr Bb Hh1 Ll Uu C2C3 T4T4 o3o4 (ss N2n2)

NOTES: So, you have a golden green hatched from the All-Earth Clutch. I know I have done these two...three...different ways but this is the final version. First, a golden green is only seen as green even if her hide has a golden sheen to it. There is no genetic way to show this. It was a magical alteration. However, I do allow the speckled portion to show through. This is a sample of a possible code: o1o2 (Ss N1N1). Technically this dragon should be listed as green w/ gold but because of that magical effect on her hide, she's golden green.

Step Eleven: Multiple Dragons in an Egg: This should be easy. Pick how many dragons were in that egg, then how many you want them to possibly have in there eggs. Most dragons have M1M1 or M1M2. You may notice that Flynnth is M2M4. She was a twin – her twin died and never made it very far – yeah, in a way she killed her twin but she was the stronger of the two. You can use this type of excuse if you want to, too. For my two, Myth has M1M2. Darketh was a twin so his code is M2M4.

green Myth: XGWDF XGWdF rr Bb HH LL UU C1C2 T1T1 OO (Ss N1N2) M1M2
black w/ copper-red Darketh: XgwDF Y Rr Bb Hh1 Ll Uu C2C3 T4T4 o3o4 (ss N2n2) M2M4

Tada! All done. Now just send me the code so I can start playing and plotting! Mwahaahaa! XD
